What’s the history of UGG?

Kicking off our UGG buyer's guide, we're taking it back to the beginning. UGG was founded in 1978 in the most unlikely place; southern California. Founded by Australian surfer Brian Smith and his friend Doug Jenson, the pair merged a love for Australian craftsmanship and sheepskin, with the relaxed easy-going Cali attitude. While the boots gained popularity within the surfer community of California at first, they were quickly picked up by athletes in the winter Olympics and then by us, finding their way into our regular winter wear.Over the years they’ve been loved by stars, including Oprah Winfrey, Blake Lively, Alexa Chung and even Leonardo DiCaprio. They’ve even been featured in Vogue, walked runways at New York Fashion Week and done collabs with designers like Jimmy Choo and Swarovski. So your cosy boots have a high fashion history.

What are UGGs made of?

The classic UGG boots are made of Grade A Twinface sheepskin with a lining made of natural wool woven into a durable backing for that signature fluffy inner. The sole of UGGs is their signature treadlite sole which provides extra cushioning and traction on wet surfaces, perfect for cold winter mornings.

The quality of their sheepskin is really what makes UGG special. It goes through extensive checking to ensure it’s quality, requiring a ‘stand up’ thickness around the entire piece to ensure durability and a luxe feel. Overall the sheepskin is checked six times during the process so only the highest quality material makes the cut.

How do UGG get their sheepskin?

UGG never use sheepskin from sheep reared solely for their skin. Only working with farmers that comply with their animal welfare policies that prevent animal abuse, cruelty and unethical sourcing, UGG only uses the sheepskin of sheep raised within the meat industry. This means that sheepskin becomes a by-product, helping to limit their impact on the environment through excess in the animal agriculture industry. To ensure this, they only source sheepskin from select tanneries in Australia, the United States, Ireland, the UK and Spain so they can trace their product and be sure of the ethics. UGG Boots

Will UGG boots be ruined in the rain or snow?

One of the most important questions in our UGG buyer's guide is, while they may not be completely ruined, UGGs are definitely not rainy-day shoes. Sheepskin and wool don’t go well with water, especially rainwater or snow which can cause salt stains and fade your UGGs. If you’re after boots that will be wearable in all conditions, a leather style is probably the one for you.

Can I wash my sheepskin UGG boots?

This is another crucial care question in our UGG buyer's guide. Being made of sheepskin, the classic UGG boots are delicate when it comes to water. Ideally, you want to avoid washing them. The UGG protector spray helps prevent stains by creating a sort of seal on the boot. Though this won’t make them waterproof, it will help stop the water from soaking into the material and creating stains, discolouration or fading. For the best results, thoroughly spray your new UGGs so they’re wet but not soaked, then leave them to air dry in a cool, well-ventilated place. Afterwards, gently brush them with a suede brush to ensure the material is nice and smoothed down. Repeat this every now and then to maintain the protection. For small marks and specks, avoid using water and try simply brushing the shoes with a suede brush. This should get rid of any little muddy marks at might be bothering you. UGG boots

If you absolutely must...

But if you feel it’s time for a big wash, caution is advised! Sheepskin and water are not good friends so you want to keep soaking to a minimum. For ease, you can take your UGGs on a trip to the dry cleaners, or to them wash at home;

Place your UGGs in a laundry bag and put them into the machine with sheets or towels to soften the spin.
Only use perfume and dye-free detergent and put them on a cold, delicate setting.
As soon as the cycle is over, take them out of the machine. Don’t let them sit in the drum.
Use your hands to fluff up the insides and set aside to air dry, coming back regularly to give the insides a fluff.

This should help make the colour of your boots uniform again and rid of any splash stains, but avoid washing until necessary.

Does UGG make boots that aren’t sheepskin?

Yep! UGG also do a range of leather boots for all-weather adventurers. Their range now extends far beyond the classic fluffy boot, now including everything from Chelsea boots and hiking boots to trending chunky sneakers. Will UGG boots stretch?

While the sheepskin exterior won’t stretch, the inner lining will bed down giving the feeling that your boots had stretched or become a little roomier. For this reason, your fresh UGGs want to be snug but not too tight that they hurt. They should hold your foot but not feel restrictive. When your UGGs are well worn and the lining has seen better days, you can buy insoles with the same fluffy feel to revive your boots back to their cosy glory! No need to replace just yet.

Do UGGs fit true to size?

UGGs generally fit true to size. However, you want your new UGGs to be snug. Overtime the inner with begin to flatten and mould to your foot making them a little roomier, so your fresh UGGs need to be tight to the foot to account for this.

The best way to check your size is to measure them! Stand on a piece of paper straight against a wall. Get someone to mark the top of your top and the back of your heel and then measure the distance between these two points. This is going to give you a far more precise and accurate measurement!
