In Conversation with Eject | Express Yourself

This season we teamed up with graffiti artist Ejectto launch our AW20 campaign Express Yourself. Passionate about design, Eject is a UK based artist creating large scale interior graffiti, murals, branding, and quirky illustrations, all with heavy impact. We asked Eject how he expresses himself through his art and what his go-to style is when creating.

How long have you been creating your artwork?

I’ve always been a doodler since I was little...it’s a life’s work so far with hardly any break just constantly trying to progress until my hands shrivel away into arthritis.

How did you get started?

My mother is very creative, she brought me and my older brother up very creatively and gave us lots of inspiration, time to play and be messy. I’ve always been interested with anything with a cartoon face from the cartoons of the 80s ,the cereal box mascots and weird consumer based typography...I just drew and drew these characters until being able to create my own characters and creative worlds.

What’s your footwear of choice when designing?

I’d like to say something dead cool...but the best way to design is wearing slippers with a brew in your hand! Generally I’m always rocking the Adidas, new balance, wallabees or onitsuka tigers ...I like 70s running style sneakers...trainers you can ninja step around in.

Where is your favourite place to create?

I prefer large scale outside murals really, all us graffiti artists are attention seekers for where our work is placed...bigger the better, really annoy the local writers who are jealous ?

What materials do you work with?

I prefer to create murals in spray paint as it is quick, bold and also doubles as therapy and exercise in one...but I’m a designer as well so I use illustrator, photoshop, and the print and layout based apps, I work in all sorts of mediums such as wood, painting on metal, sign writing...very mixed in what and how I use apps and technology but always rooted in graffiti markers and spray.

What’s on your playlist when creating?

My playlist is a seriously mixed bag (which anyone who paints alongside me will tell you) ...it ranges in scale of levels of energy and pace to fit with what work I’m creating. From Schoolboy q, roots manuva, roots reggae, dub, dancehall, fleetwood mac, Bob Dylan, there’s even a bit of Dolly Parton in there!

Artists often collaborate with designers, who would your dream designer be to collab with?

Would definitely be Eject x Patta (Amsterdam) or Eject x Stüssy... two brands I admire and have been supporting for years.

Which is your favourite look from the campaign?

Probably the black high top Converse, hoody and Levi overshirt. I like layers and over shirts...makes me think I’m from Compton not Yorkshire.
